09 Negotiated Studies #1 & 2 -07

Wow only 9 days to go until assessment and I am getting nervous.
I wonder if I have done enough, and is it good enough???
I have now sorted out all on my folders into the new A3 binders so that the majority of my work looks to be in order, and they are at least looking ok, I hope the contents match!!! All I have to do is keep the updates added to the respective folders and that side will be done and dusted.

I have gone through each of the respective e mails and placed post-it stickers against all relevant pages.
All I am doing now is awaiting any further feedback letters and I still have to do the evaluation of the whole experience.

Family Brief: -
I have started doing the mock-up to the website in Illustrator and my main task now is to build the site in Dreamweaver.
I have completed the .swf file for the section where they live, I think it works ok. The multi images of how they move should be a doddle; it’s just a case of insert the 4x .swf files into the respective folder, so that all the movies show at the same time.

Have completed the storyboard to the game,, but I am not going to have enough time to actually build the game itself, but I have been developing the actions in stop motion have completed up to 50 images so far. Hoping to make this far more elaborate than anything I have done before.
I have managed to find a few books from the library to help me with the flying sequence of the animation.

I am building the website from the Family brief.
I was hoping to build another Flash program using Arduino and Actionscript but was told not to bother.
I am gutted because I have spent money on the Arduino set and now will not be able to put it to some use. Hey ho!!!

Negotiated Studies #1 & 2 -06

Two weeks since my last entry, so busy forgot!!!
I have decided last minute to completely revamp my work.
At the moment I have followed the same procedure as the first two years but this year its fallen foul of the fact I have had so many briefs. The resulting work is a mess and needs sorting out.
I have decided to invest in A3 Binders and inserts, I have got the Binders and an waiting for the inserts to come in and then to painstakingly remove the work from the art folders they are ion at present and the place them in the new A3 folders. The I need to label each binder so it looks to be more professional

Well Zonefest came and went and although we didn’t have the numbers expected it was a success, we didn’t lose any money in fact we made a hundred pounds or so profit.
We almost 100 people on the day, I spent the day on the ticket desk, at least I was sat down!!!.
The last few days prior to the event I had over 40 e mails and couldn’t get all the requests done, I finished off the website after the event.
I managed to stay awake right through the event and even managed to help put The Guild back together on the Sunday.
I now need to put post-it stickers on all the relevant pages through out the folder
All in all I enjoyed the project

Having finished the 4 members of the Gohst family in processing, I have managed at last to get the final images finished in Flash too.
Now I have got to bring this all together in the form of a small website.
Having sorted out the images the website is now my main quest.

Negotiated Studies #1 & 2 -05

Wow I didn’t realise that it has been a month since my last entry, I just forget, pure and simple. Easter came and went and I seemed to have had more bad days than good health-wise. Poor excuse I know!!!

This module is the only one that seems to be making good progress and for once I am enjoying the experience both with the site and working with the people of Zonefest. I cannot believe that some 10 weeks ago a motley crew of people managed to gel together and produce a one day’s event of music, culture and art… for me this is amazing feat.
With all the problems of the last entry all seems to be going well and the measures I put in place are bearing fruit, no more lost data or days of work lost because I failed to backup after each session. Not only do I have the Dreamweaver files… but I have all the raw data in a file called…. would you believe…”Zonefest Files”!!!
I am still using the FTP of Dreamweaver and have experience no bad uploading, the only problems I am having is the occasional crash of the system here in the village which is more of a frustration than anything else. I have also developed a “Schedule” which is produced on an A3 piece of paper outlining all the jobs that need to be done together with the schematic of the site, this goes into my file once I have completed a section and a new one fashioned. This idea is working well.
Communication is the only gripe I have. Only a small number of the team have contacted me and this is annoying. With all the web sites I have produced it’s always the same problem, mostly you are only contacted when there is a mistake. A while ago I asked the team to keep having a look at the site and to let me know what they think, to forward any ideas they have and more importantly to let me know if they have problems with the site…to date in the main this has not happened.
The main thing is… like I said in the beginning, I am enjoying this brief.

This module is going well too!!!
I have completed the Processing section of the 4 members of the family and have just got one final member of the family to complete in the Flash section. I am planning on bringing together all the images I have produced throughout the Family brief onto on piece of A3 paper.
The idea is to use the images Colin took of my eyes and then pan out to each member of the family in a block of 4 images each for each member of the family for each of the Processing and Flash work done, that will be a total of 32 images in that section.
The Gohst Family have been fun too, wish I could have been faster in learning the Processing language.

I have made progress at last!!! I have been developing images of pigeons to use in a Flash animation. In my first year I developed images of animals using minimal lines to depict each animal. I have managed to do the same with the images of the pigeon. I was quiet pleased with the progress until I got back to the Studio. Adam asked where and what the game was all about??? Where did this come from??? There was never any instruction to produce this but I will try, and with 28 days to go I don’t think I will have the time to actually build this as a game.

This week is going to be busy, at least Saturday will be. The Zonefest will be going ahead on Saturday. We are meeting up at 9.30am and it starts at 12 midday and goes through into 12 midnight. I think I will be a very tired bunny at the end of it.

The Website goes well despite the setback of last Thursday 19^th. The site is currently tied in with various other sites on Graham Lloyd’s website and I managed to wipe all of his work of 8 years (he had no backup) from the site. I don’t think it’s a good thing to piggy back this site but the consensus of opinion is go with it at the moment, but we shall have to have our dedicated site for next year. There are planned to be a lot of images from this year’s event, and this will eat into Graham’s site. Graham locked me out of the site until he had a chat with me about his file structure which to me is rather strange.

Last Thursday I managed to wipe the whole of my site whilst trying to use a new FTP program that Graham uses, I use the dedicated internal one in Adobe Dreamweaver and have had no problems. I had backed up my site a few dates earlier but I didn’t realise how much work there was to rebuild the site as was!!! Out of the ashes rise the Phoenix and I think what I have in place now is a better site with more regular backup regime in place.

I have hit a wall in understanding the section of “Learning Processing” so I have been developing the Gohst family using the examples from the Processing site.

I have completed two of the characters mum and jnr using flash and am currently working on dad, I have completed the drawings, scanned them into the computer and am working on putting them into Flash.

I have completed the images as to the environment of where the Gohst family live, Colin photographed my eyes and I have produced a series of images to show they live in the corner of my eye

Have had a rough few weeks with health problems, so tired and exhausted by dinnertime, and that’s me by the end of the day, it’s a real effort to get going when I am like this. With only 9 weeks to go I really must get things together.

It’s been a month since my last entry, must get back to doing this weekly At last I have found something to help me with this project. Thanks to Jane Edwards and Susan Myall from Careers, she directed me to the Zone and Judith Alexander. The Zone is organising a one day music, art and culture event on the 2nd May and they wanted somebody to set up and organise the events website. I met with Judith et al, on Thursday 19th February at the Zone and talked through what was required. Using Dreamweaver I have set up the site given the parameters they provided and I was surprised they liked what I had done so far, As yet it is not online (will be Next Thursday) but the website address is

I made a suggestion that the links to the pages go through the sponsorship page rather than straight from the index page, they seemed to like that idea. So I have the usual index page, leading to the sponsorship page which has got all the links the other pages. It means when ever they navigate back from the other pages they will always hit on the sponsorship page. I have put a link from the sponsorship page back to the index page! So now it’s a case of adding the respective information to each page as it comes in.

My website is on a kind of hold while I sort the problem as to why the .swf file will not load onto my site, it will work in my browser but not when I upload to my site. I have contacted somebody called Mark on the Adobe Forums in the hope to sort out this problem. Have only been in contact for a few days, so its early days.

I have taken the photographs of Beckie Chadwick and the piece she considers to be her best. Now I need to sort out the layout The idea is to use Arduino in the presentation showing the artist full face but with half of the face missing and part of the artwork in its place, the second image is showing the ¾ side profile of the artist along with the artwork in full. The idea is to show clips of the various artists along with their respective works of art, the Arduino device picks up motion/light of somebody going past and then the artist is shown in ¾ profiles along with the full piece of work. When no action is detected by the Arduino unit then it reverts back to the full face/part artwork That’s the plan at the moment.

09 Negotiated Studies #1 & 2 -03

Dissertation: -
I managed to get the dissertation in on time with a day in hand, was up till 2am printing and binding, of course the printer decided to through a wobbly and splattered ink all over some pages. Managed to put a digital version in the drop box, it was rather disconcerting because it looks as though others could access it, but I was reassured that it was safe…

Professional Practice: -
All the best laid plans of mice and men…I was told I couldn’t generate my own brief it had to come from somebody else. Jane has asked to have a meeting with her, but I still don’t know what I am supposed to be doing. I know I am slow but this is bordering on being thick. Have asked Adam for help…again!!!!

Photographic Etching: -
Again the best laid plans of mice etc… When I looked at the plate I placed the film on last week it had more holes in it than a quilt. I processed the plate after exposure but all the bubbles in the plate came off and there were a number of holes… one right on the face. John suggested that I screen-printed instead so all was not lost.

Managed to get a number of half decent images, was pleased with the results

So pleased this week, I was able to sort out the ActionScript coding for the Photography page of my website, all I have to do is to upload it to my site.
I have 16 images and they are accessed by the click of a mouse

At last I printed 3 of the 4 images for my portfolio, it is quite a complex set of instructions, and I messed up on my 2nd image, but the other 3 are fine, nice to see my work in large format

I am going through a few last minute books to see if I can glean any more ideas before presentation date.

Have written my first e mail to Jane Edwards outlining my proposals and asking for help and or ideas, is now awaiting her reply.
I need to contact other organisations to get this brief rolling.

Not done a lot with this during the week, I have set the etching paper onto a piece of plastic and its safe in the dark in my locker at the studio.

Professional Practice: -
My main worry has always been with my Professional Practice, after a talk on Friday I believe that I have a solution to this challenge. Having produced a few images of my feelings and put them on my wall space, I have never been able to express myself before. Thanks to University, I find that I can draw and express myself in a way I could never do with my first love photography. Dez suggest I work my Professional Practice around my disability, planning a number of workshops to enable others to see for themselves what its like to be (for example) being deaf…. being in a wheelchair…. problems with mobility. I would record photographically or camcorder the results of the workshops.
Suggest I set up website, to contact other organisation but in the area and nationally. The end product would be a presentation of my findings to my peers.
At last I have a buzz about this and I can see a lot of positive things that could come from this. I am alive at last!!!!!!

On Thursday I joined a few others in the print room with Jon Archer, is this guy real??? He had me laughing right through the session. I am not sure how or when I will use this but it’s another string in my bow.
I need to produce a piece of work so I can produce my own etching. I will sort this out on Monday.

Family Brief: -
I had one of my first attempts at producing images using PhotoShop I was trying to produce digitally, my family of ghost like images. I suppose they weren’t too bad for my first affords. The idea is to produce an interactive presentation using Processing, a newish programming language. I have bought a self Teach book

I have this idea about photographing people with their work and working an interactive element to display. The idea is to show half the persons face along with the other half showing their work (But in the shape of the other half of the face) as people pass a “beam” the persons face is shown fully along with the full image of their work

Pain is taking over my world at the moment and it’s dominating every waking moment and most of my sleep. I am sleeping far more than is normal, I am hoping the docs can sort out something for me.

Having bought a drink of Feelgood, I cannot in all fairness feel I can develop this brief. The glass bottle weighs a ton it cost twice that of other drinks and the drink itself is so sickly and sugary, the packaging was very bland and to be honest I don’t feel I can develop this further.

I asked the younger students what they did with their time and what did they spend their money on. The results were far and wide but socialising seems to be a priority. So I am thinking of ideas of incorporating the ideas around socialising. This is as far as I have developed this

I think I have had some good ideas using the freedom theme

One idea I have is a bird flying away with a phone cord attached to its neck. The further it flies the cord stretches and finally breaks

Another idea I have is to have a surfer riding the waves which start to overwhelm him with the messages feel/feeling/freedom/free and the surfer emerging with SKYPE written on his surfboard

One idea I have is showing a growing child/adult with the messaging on the computer “HP grows with you”

Another idea is the computer comes a live with plants and grows as you work on the pc… in the same images it show the hair of the person growing as well

At £2 a small bottle I find this extortionate pricing, I am not sure being in a glass bottle is helping their cause. The label is uninspiring; as yet I haven’t opened the bottle to taste.

I really don’t feel I can do this any justice.

I have notice that there are a lot more adverts and campaigns to get men to be more aware of hygiene and to take care of themselves.

I suspect the campaign would have to use a high profile sportsperson or film star to get men to use these, in what has almost been a feminine domain. Apart from Mobile phones and cigarettes, it’s going to take a lot before men carry tissues as a matter of course.

I am carrying on a little longer with this one.

I see there are widgets for almost anything for the computer but little for the disabled, so this is the direction I am going. I am looking at large easily seen buttons not only for the sighted people but for those who have problems with smaller buttons on most remotes. I can see buttons for emergencies, to contact close friends, different sounds and visuals for those with hearing and visual problems.

Overview

I seem to working better now, despite the slow start. I am logging my time with time spent in the studio with the time spent in self directed studies. It’s a lot better than my time in July, August and September.

I am slowly overcoming my personal problems so I can devote more time to the tasks in hand. Exhaustion is still a major problem.
